Energy Efficiency

Approximately 4.6 million commercial buildings in the U.S. account for 32% of the nation’s electric consumption and one-sixth of the nation’s total energy use. These buildings represent nearly 55 billion square feet of commercial space. Over the past decade rising electricity costs have represented an increasing share of corporate business expenditures. Accordingly, energy efficiency technologies and best practices are being widely embraced by corporations dedicated to saving money. Energy efficient technologies can significantly reduce electric and natural gas consumption for end-users across all market sectors. Socially conscientious companies and organizations also utilize energy efficiency to reduce environmental impact on the community. Further, alternative energy and building design standards have been documented to improve worker productivity.

ENERGY STAR® is a voluntary program sponsored by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and the Department of Energy (DOE). EPA and DOE promote the use of energy efficient equipment and facilities by awarding the ENERGY STAR® label in over 20 different categories such as:

  • Heating and Cooling Equipment

Companies seeking to promote the efficiency of products or buildings can take advantage of the many tools and incentives the ENERGY STAR® Program provides. DOE also maintains an energy efficiency research, development and deployment program providing approximately $200 million annually to manufacturers and end-users.
